If you are seen for an evaluation, the time needed depends on the issue and expectation. Most clients are seen more in the beginning, then, as time goes on, less frequently. The number of treatment sessions depends on your needs and goals.

The length of time a client is in counseling depends on the nature of the problem and the goals of the counseling. Some clients have a very specific problem that can be worked through in a set course of counseling. For others, counseling is an on-going learning process and may continue for a longer period.
After an initial evaluation, short term medication for a medically monitored taper along with intensive outpatient group and/or individual counseling has been appropriate for many clients. A six day taper can be initiated on the first day of mild withdrawal. Education and referral to appropriate community services are part of the treatment plan.

As counselors and therapists, we work well with physicians and psychiatrists on a daily basis. Medication assisted treatment is often very effective especially for substance dependence and withdrawal issues. Our physician staff is often consulted to integrate care, working with your private psychiatrist, county mental health services, or a family physician is also an option.
